Our close partnerships with publishers and college bookstores have positioned RedShelf to bring affordable digital course materials to students and professors like you across the country.Our BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) technology is accessible on any web-browser based device with no requirement to use a dedicated reader or download an application. With familiar tools such as bookmarking, highlighting, and note-taking, our eTextbook software allows students to study and learn like they would with paper. Our software also allows for digital advances, such as keyword search, dictionary look-up, and 24/7 access from nearly any device.

 

Job Summary:  

RedShelf is a higher-ed tech startup based in Chicago, IL. Our mission is to help the learning community transition from print to digital course materials.

Over the past five years, RedShelf experienced 400% YOY growth and we’re looking to expand its Finance team with this newly created position. We’re looking to add a talented and passionate Controller who will report directly to the Chief Financial Officer. Partnering with the executive team, the Controller will identify areas of improvement, review accounting, and finance practices and drive change actives cross the organization.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Improve and lead the accounting close and reporting process while ensuring records are maintained in accordance with accounting principles
  • Participate in developing budgets and forecasting operational analysis
  • Work with the management team to provide vision and leadership relating to accounting best practices
  • Perform monthly analysis of general ledger account variances, reconcile changes and report findings to management
  • Implement process improvements and establish departmental key performance indicators while promoting efficiencies
  • Identify potential issues or financial risks, and provide recommendations on how to resolve
  • Develop and maintain accounting policies and procedures; including safety, security, and privacy of financial information
  • Ability to take initiative, develop and identify areas of opportunity and propose solutions
  • Proven ability to maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive data and information
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with stakeholders; employees, executive board, customers, and vendors
  • Achieve high performance goals and meet deadlines in a fast-paced highly dynamic environment
  • Perform other duties as assigned by manager

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Finance/Accounting or related field - CPA Certification or MBA preferred
  • 5-10 years of progressive experience in an accounting or financial roles
  • Experience managing employees; ability to make hiring decisions, develop and coach direct reports, and evaluating performance accordingly
  • Financial modeling skills, data mining, extraction and validation testing
  • Commitment to meet financial reporting deadlines
  • Strong self-directed organizational skills and ability to manage time effectively
  • Strong analytical and business acumen
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to interface with C-Level executives
  • Proficiency in accounting and ERP systems: QuickBooks, Xero, NetSuite, etc.
  • Proficiency in all MS Office applications, including advanced Excel skills

Other Desirable Skills/Experience:

  • Knowledge and appreciation of the advances in higher educational software, course materials, and digital publishing
  • Background and/or experience in educational technology and/or publishing
  • Comfort and/or experience in a startup environment
